The Topkapi Palace served as the main residence of Ottoman sultans from the 15th to the 19th century. Built after the conquest of Constantinople by Mehmed II, it is renowned for its courtyards, pavilions, and imperial treasures. Located on the Sarayburnu promontory, it overlooks the meeting point of the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn. Its gardens contain cypress trees, plane trees, roses, and various urban birds, including seagulls and pigeons. This green setting supports a small ecosystem that enhances biodiversity and environmental balance in Istanbul's historic center.

Topkapi Palace

The Topkapi Palace served as the principal residence of the Ottoman sultans from the fifteenth century until the mid nineteenth century. Commissioned by Mehmed II after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, the palace became the political, administrative, and ceremonial heart of the Ottoman Empire. Its courtyards, pavilions, treasury collections, and royal gardens preserve centuries of Ottoman architecture, culture, and imperial tradition. The palace ecosystem is shaped by its strategic location between the Bosporus, the Golden Horn, and the Sea of Marmara. Its gardens feature cypress trees, oriental plane trees, roses, tulips, and other ornamental plants historically cultivated for the imperial court. Wildlife includes sparrows, pigeons, seagulls, crows, and numerous migratory birds passing through Istanbul's important migration corridor. This urban ecosystem blends cultural heritage, historic landscaping, and biodiversity within a unique coastal metropolitan environment.

Gülhane Park

Gülhane Park is one of Istanbul's oldest and most iconic green spaces. It originally served as the outer royal gardens of the Topkapi Palace during the Ottoman Empire and was opened to the public in 1912. Historically, it hosted significant imperial and social events. The park supports rich urban biodiversity, including plane trees, cypresses, rose gardens, and numerous migratory bird species that travel along the Bosphorus corridor. Its walking paths, seasonal flower displays, and scenic views provide an important ecological and cultural sanctuary within the bustling city center.
