Lion Monument

The Lion Monument, also called the Lion of Lucerne, is one of Switzerland's most famous landmarks. Carved between 1820 and 1821 into a natural sandstone cliff, it was designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen to commemorate the Swiss Guards killed during the French Revolution in 1792. The sculpture portrays a dying lion protecting symbols of both the French monarchy and Switzerland, expressing loyalty and sacrifice. Surrounded by a peaceful park, reflective pond, and alpine vegetation, the monument offers a calm ecological setting in the heart of Lucerne. Its fusion of natural rock formations, greenery, and historical art creates a unique balance between culture, memory, and the Swiss landscape.
