Bath–Roman Thermal

The Roman Baths of Bath, located in Somerset, England, are one of the best preserved Roman archaeological sites in Britain. Built around natural geothermal springs, they formed a major social, religious, and bathing complex dedicated to the goddess Sulis Minerva. The modern city of Bath developed around these mineral rich warm waters. The surrounding ecosystem lies within the River Avon valley, featuring deciduous woodlands, hedgerows, and urban parks. Local fauna includes birds such as blackbirds, great tits, and gulls, as well as bats and occasional river otters. The landscape reflects a balance between natural river ecology and a long-established urban environment shaped by history and continues to attract global visitors today annually.

Bath–Roman Thermal

The Roman Baths of Bath, located in Somerset, England, are among the best-preserved ancient thermal complexes in Europe. They were built by the Romans in the 1st century AD around natural geothermal springs reaching about 46°C. The site was dedicated to the goddess Sulis Minerva, blending Roman and Celtic religious traditions. Over time, the complex expanded and was later rediscovered and preserved as an important heritage landmark. The ecosystem of Bath lies within the River Avon valley, surrounded by rolling green hills and urban landscapes. Flora includes oak, lime, and chestnut trees, along with ornamental gardens throughout the city. Local fauna includes bats, swifts, river fish, and various bird species adapted to urban environments. The hot springs also host thermophilic microorganisms, creating a unique micro-ecosystem within the thermal waters. This environment combines history biodiversity tourism and conservation within a living urban heritage landscape of global significance and importance today still.

Sacred Spring

Near Somerset, England, several springs have long been regarded as sacred since Celtic and Roman times. One of the most significant is the "Sacred Spring" at the Roman Baths in Bath, where geothermal water rises at high temperature from a deep geological fault. For the ancient Celts, the site was a place of worship dedicated to the goddess Sulis, later associated with Minerva by the Romans. Over centuries, its waters were believed to possess healing properties, making the spring an important religious, medicinal, and cultural centre in British history.
