The Yunque National Park
The Yunque National Forest, located in northeastern Puerto Rico, is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. Its lush mountains, waterfalls like La Mina, and scenic trails protect remarkable biodiversity, including the native coquĆ frog. Originally protected by the Spanish Crown in 1876 as a forest reserve, it came under U.S. administration in 1898 and was designated a national forest in 1903. Its name derives from the TaĆno word "YukĆ©," linked to an indigenous deity. Covering over 28,000 acres, the forest features lush vegetation, waterfalls such as La Mina, cloud forests, and remarkable biodiversity, including the iconic coquĆ frog and many endemic species. Scenic trails, observation towers, and historic structures allow visitors to experience this vital Caribbean ecosystem.
