Nassau – Charlotte Fort

Nassau is the capital of Bahamas and home to the historic Fort Charlotte, an 18th-century British colonial fort overlooking the harbor. Its history is tied to maritime trade, piracy defense, and colonial expansion in the Caribbean. The surrounding ecosystem is tropical marine, shaped by coral reefs, seagrass beds, and coastal mangrove forests that protect shorelines and support biodiversity. Native flora includes coconut palms, sea grapes, and salt-tolerant shrubs adapted to sandy soils and salty winds. The fauna features tropical fish, sea turtles, reef-building corals, iguanas, and numerous seabirds. The interaction between urban development in Nassau and fragile coastal ecosystems creates environmental pressure, particularly from tourism, climate change, and coastal erosion, making conservation efforts essential for long-term ecological balance.
