Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque, officially known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, was built between 1609 and 1617 during the reign of Sultan Ahmed I. It is one of Istanbul's most iconic landmarks, renowned for its more than twenty thousand blue İznik tiles. Although located in a dense urban setting, its gardens feature cypress trees, oriental plane trees, roses, and various bird species such as sparrows, pigeons, and Bosphorus gulls. Its ecosystem blends historical heritage, landscaped green spaces, and biodiversity adapted to the coastal environment of the strait.

Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque, officially known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, was built between 1609 and 1617 during the reign of Sultan Ahmed I. It is one of Istanbul's most iconic landmarks and a masterpiece of classical Ottoman architecture. Its popular name comes from the more than twenty thousand blue İznik tiles that adorn its interior. Surrounded by historic gardens and public squares, the mosque is part of a cultural ecosystem where green spaces, urban wildlife, and ornamental vegetation coexist within the city. Common animal species include seagulls, pigeons, sparrows, and swifts that nest around nearby historic structures. The local flora features cypress trees, Oriental plane trees, roses, and a variety of ornamental plants adapted to the temperate Bosphorus climate. This setting illustrates the harmonious relationship between architectural heritage, urban biodiversity, and daily life, making the area both a cultural treasure and an important urban ecological space.

Sultanahmet Square

Sultanahmet Square is the historic heart of Istanbul and one of Turkey's most iconic public spaces. During the Roman era, it was known as the Hippodrome of Constantinople, built in the 3rd century CE as a venue for chariot races and imperial ceremonies. The square still preserves landmarks such as the Obelisk of Theodosius and the Serpent Column. Surrounded by the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, it reflects both Byzantine and Ottoman heritage. Its landscaped gardens contain plane trees, cypresses, and green areas that support urban wildlife, including sparrows, pigeons, and seagulls, creating a small ecosystem within the historic setting.
