Santa Sofhia

Santa Sophia, located in Istanbul, was completed in AD 537 under the rule of Justinian I. Originally built as a Byzantine cathedral, it later became a mosque, then a museum, and today functions again as a mosque. Its vast dome represents a masterpiece of world architecture. Although surrounded by a dense urban environment, its gardens contain cypress and plane trees that support pigeons, sparrows, and other city birds, creating a modest yet valuable urban ecosystem around this historic landmark.

Santa Sofhia

Santa Sofia in Istanbul, Turkey, stands as one of the world's greatest architectural and historical landmarks. Built in 537 under Emperor Justinian I, it served as a Byzantine cathedral, an Ottoman mosque, a museum, and again a mosque. Its immense dome, marble surfaces, and mosaics reflect centuries of faith, power, and craftsmanship. In its dense urban setting, the local ecosystem is limited but alive: plane trees, cypresses, pigeons, sparrows, and insects adapt to the city's parks and courtyards. Wildlife is mostly urban and resilient. Santa Sofia remains a symbol of cultural continuity, linking continents, religions, and civilizations within the heart of Istanbul. Its presence attracts visitors, scholars, and worshippers worldwide.

Santa Sofhia

Hagia Sophia, internationally known as Santa Sophia, is one of the most iconic landmarks in Istanbul. It was built between 532 and 537 under the orders of Emperor Justinian I as the grand cathedral of the Byzantine Empire. Over the centuries, it served as a church, mosque, museum, and later again as a mosque, reflecting the region's rich cultural and religious heritage. Although located in a densely urban setting and lacking a distinct natural ecosystem of its own, the monument is surrounded by historic gardens featuring cypress trees, oriental plane trees, roses, and ornamental plants adapted to the Bosporus climate. Urban wildlife commonly found nearby includes seagulls, pigeons, sparrows, and the famous cats of Istanbul. The surrounding ecosystem blends green spaces, architectural heritage, and maritime influences from the Bosporus Strait, creating a unique environment where history, culture, and nature coexist in remarkable harmony.

Gülhane Park

Gülhane Park is one of Istanbul's oldest historic parks. It originally served as the outer gardens of Topkapi Palace during the Ottoman Empire and was opened to the public in 1912. Its name means "House of Roses," reflecting its long tradition of ornamental gardens. Ecologically, the park contains many centuries old trees, including plane trees and cypresses, while providing habitat for various urban bird species. Its walking paths, green spaces, and Bosphorus views make it an important natural and cultural sanctuary within the city's historic center.
