The Habana

The Havana, founded in 1519 by Diego VelƔzquez de CuƩllar, was vital to Caribbean colonial routes. Its historic center, Old Havana, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its ecosystem blends coasts, mangroves, and dry forests. Palms, ceiba trees, and tropical flora dominate. Fauna includes birds like the Cuban trogon, reptiles, and marine species. The tropical climate supports biodiversity but faces urban and climate pressures.

The Habana

The Havana, the capital of Cuba, is a historic city founded by the Spanish in 1519 in a strategic Caribbean bay. Its old quarter, Old Havana, preserves forts, colonial squares, and architecture that reflect centuries of trade, defense, and cultural life. It played a major role on the maritime route between the Americas and Europe, shaping its urban growth and heritage. Its ecosystem is coastal-tropical, influenced by the sea, mangroves, lagoons, and urban vegetation. Flora includes royal palms, gumbo-limbo trees, ceibas, red mangroves, and ornamental plants adapted to the warm climate. Fauna includes seabirds, gulls, pelicans, reptiles, bats, and small mammals. Nearby natural areas support coastal, reef, and mangrove ecosystems, which are vital for biodiversity and erosion control. Havana blends historical heritage, marine scenery, and biological richness in a unique Caribbean setting.

Castle of the Three Kings of the Morro

The Castle of the Three Kings of Morro, at the entrance to Havana Bay, is a colonial fortress built between 1589 and 1630 to protect the city from pirates and European enemies. Its design, attributed to Juan Bautista Antonelli, takes advantage of the rocky promontory of El Morro and controls the channel into the harbor. It was a key part of Havana's defensive system and is now one of Cuba's most important historical symbols. From its walls, visitors enjoy sweeping views of the sea and Havana, and its later-added lighthouse remains an iconic landmark of the city.
