Panama canal
The Panama Canal is one of the world's greatest engineering achievements and a vital artery of global trade. Opened in 1914, it links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans across the Isthmus of Panama, shortening maritime routes by thousands of kilometers. Its lock system raises and lowers ships using water from Gatun Lake, a remarkable technical and environmental feat. Expanded in 2016 with a third set of locks, it now accommodates larger Neopanamax vessels. The canal has played a crucial role in Panama's economic development and stands as a symbol of human ingenuity in reshaping geography to facilitate international commerce.

Panama Canal
The Panama Canal is one of the most important engineering achievements in the world and a cornerstone of global maritime trade. Located in the heart of Panama, it connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans across 82 kilometers, cutting through the narrowest part of the American continent. Its history began in the late 19th century with a failed French effort and was completed in 1914 under U.S. administration, before transferring to Panamanian control in 1999. The canal operates through a system of locks and Gatun Lake, an artificial lake formed by damming the Chagres River, allowing ships to be raised and lowered. The surrounding region hosts remarkable tropical biodiversity, including rainforests, wetlands, and mangroves that shelter diverse wildlife and plant species. Beyond its historical and economic significance, the canal represents a unique balance between human innovation and the natural environment.

Monkey Island
Monkey Island, located in Gatun Lake within the Panama Canal, is an important scientific research site managed by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute since the early 20th century. It was originally used for studies on primate behavior, ecology, and conservation. The island is home to several monkey species and diverse tropical wildlife, making it a global reference for biological research and the preservation of the canal's natural ecosystems.
