Mendenhall Glacier

Mendenhall Glacier is one of Southeast Alaska's most iconic natural landmarks, located about 12 miles from Juneau within the Tongass National Forest. It is part of the Juneau Icefield, a vast glacial system that began forming over 3,000 years ago during the Little Ice Age. Stretching roughly 12 miles long, the glacier flows from the coastal mountains into Mendenhall Lake, creating a striking landscape of ice, water, and temperate rainforest. Historically, the glacier once extended much closer to Juneau, but since the late 19th century it has steadily retreated, becoming a significant indicator of climate change. Today, the surrounding area is protected and accessible through interpretive trails, offering visitors the opportunity to view ice caves, waterfalls, and diverse wildlife, while gaining insight into the geological history and ongoing environmental changes shaping Alaska's glacial ecosystems.

Kayaking on the sea

Canoeing on the lake fed by the Mendenhall Glacier offers a peaceful yet powerful adventure. The cold, milky-blue waters come from glacial melt and mirror Alaska's mountains and dense forests. As you paddle, floating icebergs, ancient ice walls, and waterfalls cascading from the glacier surround you. The quiet is broken only by cracking ice and gentle water sounds, allowing an immersive connection with pristine wilderness and showcasing the raw beauty of one of Alaska's most iconic natural landscapes.
