Brandenburg Gate

The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany, is an 18th-century neoclassical monument commissioned by King Frederick William II as a symbol of peace. It witnessed Cold War division and later German reunification. Though urban, its surroundings host linden trees, birds like sparrows and pigeons, and adaptable insects. The ecosystem reflects interaction between historic architecture and urban nature, supported by nearby green spaces such as Tiergarten and ecological corridors promoting biodiversity within the city.

Brandenburg Gate

The Brandenburg Gate, located in the heart of Berlin, was built between 1788 and 1791 under the reign of Frederick William II of Prussia. Designed in neoclassical style, it symbolizes peace and unity. During the Cold War, it stood isolated near the Berlin Wall, becoming a powerful symbol of division and later reunification. Its urban surroundings lack extensive natural ecosystems but include ornamental vegetation such as linden trees and shrubs. Fauna is limited, mainly consisting of urban birds like pigeons and sparrows, well adapted to human activity and the constant flow of tourism.

Brandenburg Gate

The Brandenburg Gate, located in the heart of Berlin, is a neoclassical monument built between 1788 and 1791 under Frederick William II of Prussia and designed by Carl Gotthard Langhans. Inspired by Athens' Propylaea, it initially symbolized peace but later stood for division during the Cold War, positioned beside the Berlin Wall. After its fall in 1989, the gate became a powerful symbol of German reunification. Its surrounding ecosystem is urban, influenced by nearby green spaces such as the Tiergarten. The flora features linden, oak, and chestnut trees, while fauna includes urban adapted birds like pigeons, sparrows, and crows, along with small mammals. This ecosystem highlights the interaction between historic architecture and adaptive urban nature within a modern European metropolitan setting.

Reichstag Building

The Reichstag Building, home of the German parliament in Berlin, was inaugurated in 1894 during the German Empire. Designed by Paul Wallot, it symbolizes national unity. It suffered severe damage during the 1933 fire and World War II. After reunification, it was restored by Norman Foster, adding a glass dome representing democratic transparency. Ecologically, it incorporates sustainable systems such as natural ventilation and renewable energy use. Its modern design blends history and sustainability, making it an architectural and political icon of contemporary Germany and the world.
