Varadero
Varadero is one of Cuba's tourist destinations, located on the Hicacos Peninsula. Its origins date to the 19th century as a salt-mining and fishing area. In the early 20th century, wealthy families built summer mansions, notably that of Irénée du Pont. After 1959, the government expanded tourism. It features 20 km of white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, coral reefs, and caves, forming a valuable coastal ecosystem.

Varadero, located on the Hicacos Peninsula, is one of Cuba's most iconic tourist destinations. Its origins date back to the 19th century, when wealthy families built summer homes drawn by its white-sand beaches and turquoise waters. It was officially founded as a resort town in 1887. During the 1940s and 1950s, it flourished with hotels, mansions, and clubs, including the famous Xanadú Mansion. After the 1959 Cuban Revolution, access broadened and international tourism expanded. Today, Varadero blends historical heritage with modern hotel infrastructure and a rich natural environment featuring coral reefs, caves, and diverse coastal biodiversity.

Varadero
Varadero is one of Cuba's most iconic destinations, located on the Hicacos Peninsula along the island's northern coast. Before Spanish colonization, the area was inhabited by Taíno indigenous communities. In the late 19th century, Varadero began developing as a seaside resort when wealthy families built summer homes, notably the Xanadú Mansion owned by businessman Irenee du Pont in the 1930s. Throughout the 20th century, its reputation grew due to its long stretches of white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, leading to the expansion of hotels and tourism infrastructure. After the 1959 Cuban Revolution, Varadero evolved into an internationally accessible destination. Today, it blends historical heritage with a rich natural environment, featuring mangroves, caves like Saturno and Ambrosio, and diverse marine life, making it a premier Caribbean tourist hub.

Caves (Saturn and Ambrosio)
Saturno and Ambrosio caves are two of Varadero's most notable natural landmarks on the Hicacos Peninsula. Cueva de Saturno is a freshwater underground cenote known for its cool, clear water, stalactite and stalagmite formations, and its popularity for snorkeling and diving in a natural pool. Cueva de Ambrosio, located in the Varahicacos Ecological Reserve, is an important archaeological site with pre-Columbian cave paintings; they were discovered in 1961 by Manuel Rivero de la Calle and Mario Orlando Pariente Pérez
