Canterbury is a historic city in southeastern England, founded in Roman times as Durovernum Cantiacorum. During the Middle Ages it became a major religious center after the martyrdom of Thomas Becket in 1170, inspiring pilgrimages described by Geoffrey Chaucer. Its natural setting includes the River Stour valley, with wetlands, deciduous woodlands, and fertile soils. Canterbury
Canterbury is a historic city in southeastern England, renowned since the Middle Ages for its cathedral and its long standing role as a religious center. Originally founded during Roman times as Durovernum Cantiacorum, it developed into a major cultural and spiritual hub. Its ecosystem reflects the typical Kent landscape, characterized by gentle hills, fertile soils, and a temperate oceanic climate. The flora includes oak, beech, and ash trees, along with meadows rich in wildflowers. Wetland areas nearby support reeds and willows. Local fauna features foxes, badgers, squirrels, and birds such as blackbirds and robins, alongside essential pollinating insects. The River Stour flows through the city, contributing aquatic biodiversity with fish and waterfowl. The long interaction between human settlement and nature has shaped a balanced environment where parks, gardens, and natural reserves coexist harmoniously with historic architecture.

Dover Castle
Dover Castle, located near Canterbury, is one of England's most iconic medieval fortresses. Its origins date back to Roman times, though it was greatly expanded in the 12th century under Henry II. Known as the "Key to England," it guarded the coastline against invasions. Over the centuries, it played a strategic role in major conflicts, including the Napoleonic Wars and World War II, aided by its secret tunnels and commanding position overlooking the English Channel.
