Tracy Arm Fjords
Tracy Arm Fjords is one of Southeast Alaska's most dramatic natural wonders, located about 45 miles southeast of Juneau within the protected Tongass National Forest. This long, narrow fjord was carved over thousands of years by advancing glaciers, creating towering granite cliffs that rise more than 3,000 feet above the water. The fjord was named in the late 19th century in honor of U.S. Secretary of the Navy Benjamin Franklin Tracy during early American exploration of the region. Tracy Arm splits into two main branches, North Arm and South Arm, home to the active Sawyer Glaciers, famous for calving ice into the sea. Long before modern exploration, the area was used by the Tlingit people, who relied on its abundant marine resources. Today, Tracy Arm is celebrated for its floating icebergs, waterfalls, seals, whales, and pristine wilderness, offering a living record of Alaska's geological forces and human history.
