Gros Morne National Park
Gros Morne National Park, located on the west coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, is a dramatic landscape designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its geological history is extraordinary: the park exposes sections of the Earth's mantle at the surface, formed by tectonic plate movement more than 450 million years ago. The park takes its name from Gros Morne Mountain, the second-highest peak in the province. Before its establishment in 1973, the area was inhabited by Indigenous peoples and later by European fishing communities tied to the North Atlantic. Fjords, cliffs, highland plateaus, and glacial lakes shape its terrain. Gros Morne preserves not only rich biodiversity but also tells a powerful story of Earth's ancient evolution and humanity's long-standing connection with a rugged natural environment.
