Similan Islands

The Similan Islands, located in Phang Nga, are part of the renowned Mu Ko Similan National Park, established in 1982 to protect one of the Andaman Sea's most valuable marine ecosystems. Their tropical forests support birds, bats, reptiles, and small mammals. Beneath the surface, extensive coral reefs provide habitat for colorful reef fish, sea turtles, manta rays, and occasionally whale sharks. The combination of crystal clear waters, distinctive granite formations, and exceptional biodiversity makes the Similan Islands a significant ecological sanctuary and an internationally recognized conservation destination.

Similan Islands

The Similan Islands are a remarkable archipelago in the Andaman Sea, off the coast of Phang Nga. Their name derives from the Malay word sembilan, meaning "nine," although the national park now encompasses eleven islands. Established as a Marine National Park in 1982, the Similan Islands are internationally renowned for their crystal clear waters, massive granite formations, and exceptional marine biodiversity. Their ecosystems blend tropical evergreen forests, pristine white sand beaches, and extensive coral reefs. Native flora includes bamboo, rattan, coconut palms, and other coastal tropical trees. The fauna is equally diverse, featuring sea turtles, whale sharks, manta rays, colorful reef fish, seabirds, dusky langurs, bats, and numerous reptile species. The islands are considered among the world's premier diving destinations, while strict conservation measures help protect fragile reefs, marine breeding grounds, and the region's unique ecological balance.

Roca Vela Island, located in the Similan Islands, is one of the most iconic granite formations in the Andaman Sea. Found on Island No. 8 near the famous Donald Duck Bay, this massive boulder was shaped over millions of years by wind, rain, and ocean erosion. Its sail like silhouette has become a recognized symbol of the marine national park. From the viewpoint, visitors enjoy panoramic views of turquoise waters, white-sand beaches, and tropical coastal forests.
