Basel

Basel is one of Switzerland's oldest and most culturally significant cities, located along the Rhine River near the borders of France and Germany. Its history dates back to Celtic and Roman times, later becoming an influential medieval center for trade, religion, and education. The city is renowned for historic landmarks such as Basel Minster and its remarkably preserved medieval and Renaissance architecture. Basel also became famous for its university, founded in 1460, one of the oldest in Europe. Basel's ecosystem is strongly shaped by the Rhine River, which supports rich aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity. The city's parks, surrounding forests, and protected natural areas provide habitats for swans, herons, foxes, hedgehogs, and many migratory bird species. Native vegetation includes beeches, oaks, lindens, and seasonal alpine flowers. Basel is also recognized for its environmental initiatives, including sustainable public transportation, extensive green spaces, renewable energy efforts, and conservation programs designed to balance urban growth with ecological preservation.

Basler Pfalz

Basler Pfalz is a historic panoramic terrace located behind Basel Cathedral, overlooking the Rhine River. Its name derives from the Latin Palatium, referring to the former bishop's residence once nearby. Since the Middle Ages, the terrace has served as an important urban viewpoint and cultural landmark. Beneath the site lie archaeological remains from Celtic, Roman, and medieval periods connected to the Münsterhügel district. The ecological setting includes gardens, mature trees, and birdlife typical of the Rhine Valley, creating a peaceful natural atmosphere within the old city and linking Basel with the surrounding tri-border landscape of Switzerland, France, and Germany.
