The Haya
The Hague, the Dutch seat of government, originated in the 13th century around the counts of Holland's court. Its urban evolution blends palaces, tree-lined avenues, and modern districts. The ecosystem includes coastal dunes, forests like Haagse Bos, and urban parks. Flora features oaks, beeches, and dune grasses; fauna includes migratory birds, foxes, rabbits, and nearby marine species. The interaction between city and nature supports biodiversity and environmental resilience while maintaining balance with human development.

The Haya

The Haya
The Hague, the Dutch seat of government, originated in the 13th century around the Binnenhof, a political complex still in use today. Unlike Amsterdam, it preserves a calm, diplomatic character, strengthened by institutions such as the International Court of Justice. Its ecosystem blends urban and natural environments: the Haagse Bos forest, one of the country's oldest, features oaks, beeches, and birds like owls and woodpeckers. Along the coast, the dunes of Scheveningen protect against the North Sea and support wind resistant vegetation such as marram grass. Wildlife including foxes, rabbits, and migratory birds thrives here, reflecting a balance between urban development and environmental conservation.

The Haya
The Hague, known in Dutch as Den Haag, is one of the most influential cities in the Netherlands. It originated in the 13th century as the residence of the Counts of Holland and gradually developed into the country's political center, hosting the Dutch government and royal court. Unlike many Dutch cities, it never formally received medieval city rights, yet it became a major administrative and international diplomatic hub, home to institutions such as the International Court of Justice. Its ecosystem blends coastal dunes, forests like Haagse Bos, and well maintained urban green spaces. The flora includes oak, beech, and dune adapted plants, while the fauna features seabirds, rabbits, and foxes. Its proximity to the North Sea shapes a mild maritime climate that supports biodiversity and encourages strong environmental conservation practices.

Binnenhof
The Binnenhof is a medieval historic complex in The Hague, housing the Dutch parliament since the 13th century. Originally built by the Counts of Holland, it evolved from a noble residence into a political center. Its courtyard and Gothic buildings, such as the Ridderzaal, symbolize institutional continuity. Ecologically, it connects with the Hofvijver pond, supporting urban biodiversity, waterfowl, and microclimate regulation, contributing green space and environmental balance within a dense, highly visited urban setting.
