Portobelo and its fortifications
Portobelo, on Panama's Caribbean coast, was one of the most important ports of the Spanish Empire from the 16th to the 18th centuries. It served as a key storage and shipping point for gold and silver from South America. Its fortifications San Felipe, San Jer贸nimo, and Santiago de la Gloria defended the bay from pirates and privateers such as Francis Drake. Today, these stone ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlight Portobelo's military, commercial, and cultural significance in colonial history.

Portobelo, located on Panama's Caribbean coast, was one of the most important ports of the Spanish Empire in the Americas. Founded in 1597, it became a key hub for the export of gold and silver from South America. Its fortifications San Felipe, San Jer贸nimo, Santiago de la Gloria, and San Fernando were built between the 17th and 18th centuries to protect the bay from pirate attacks and rival powers. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these military structures illustrate colonial defensive engineering and Portobelo's strategic role in Atlantic trade routes.

Portobelo and its fortifications
Portobelo, on Panama's Caribbean coast, was one of the most important ports of the Spanish Empire in the Americas between the 16th and 18th centuries. Founded in 1597, it became the main departure point for gold, silver, and goods transported from South America to Europe through the famous trade fairs. To safeguard these treasures from pirates and rival powers, an extensive defensive system was built, including fortresses such as San Felipe, San Jer贸nimo, Santiago de la Gloria, and San Fernando. These structures, examples of advanced military engineering of their time, endured attacks from corsairs such as Sir Francis Drake. Today, Portobelo's fortifications, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stand as an outstanding testimony to colonial trade and Spanish defensive strategy in the Caribbean.

Saint Francis of Assisi Church
The Saint Francis of Assisi Church, located in Panama City's historic Casco Antiguo, is a significant example of colonial religious architecture. Founded in the 17th century, it reflects the simplicity of Franciscan design, featuring an austere fa莽ade and solid masonry construction. Inside, visitors find side altars, wooden details, and a serene atmosphere for contemplation. Over time, the church has undergone restorations that preserve its historical, spiritual, and cultural importance as part of the World Heritage historic district.
