Antalya is one of the most important cities on Turkey's Mediterranean coast and has been inhabited since ancient times. Founded around the 2nd century BCE by King Attalus II of Pergamon, the city flourished under Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman rule, leaving behind a remarkable historical legacy visible in its walls, harbor, and monuments. Due to its strategic location, Antalya became a significant commercial and maritime center in the eastern Mediterranean. Antalya's natural environment is characterized by a unique combination of mountains, forests, rivers, and coastline. The nearby Taurus Mountains support forests of pine, cedar, juniper, and oak trees. Local wildlife includes foxes, wild boars, wild goats, sea turtles, birds of prey, and numerous migratory bird species. The Mediterranean waters are home to fish, dolphins, and a variety of marine invertebrates. The region's ecosystem blends marine, forest, and mountain habitats, creating exceptional biodiversity. Its Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and warm summers, supports abundant plant and animal life throughout the year.

Hadrian's Gate

Hadrian's Gate located in Muratpaşa, Antalya, was built in 130 CE to commemorate the visit of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. This marble monument, featuring three richly decorated arches and adjoining defensive towers, remains one of the best-preserved entrances to the ancient city of Attaleia. Its surroundings include Mediterranean gardens with pine trees, bougainvillea, and palms that provide habitat for local bird species. The blend of remarkable history and green urban spaces makes the site an important cultural, touristic, and ecological landmark in southern Turkey.
