 Temple of Apolo

The Temple of Apollo on the islet of Palatia in Naxos is one of Greece's most iconic monuments. Built in the 6th century BCE by the tyrant Lygdamis, it was never completed, and only its monumental gateway, known as the Portara, remains. Dedicated to the god Apollo, it formed part of a grand Ionic sanctuary. Historically, it is linked to myths of Ariadne, Theseus, and Dionysus. Ecologically, the islet features Mediterranean vegetation adapted to wind and salt, along with seabirds inhabiting its rocky coastal environment.
