Apoyo Lagoon

Apoyo Lagoon is a volcanic crater lake located between the departments of Masaya and Granada in western Nicaragua. It was formed around 23,000 years ago after a massive explosive eruption that created a deep caldera later filled by rain and underground المياه. In 1991, the area was officially declared a Natural Reserve, recognizing its geological, historical, and environmental importance. Archaeological remains around the lagoon indicate its relevance to pre-Columbian cultures as a source of water and natural shelter. The reserve protects a tropical dry forest ecosystem with over 500 plant species, as well as diverse wildlife including mammals, reptiles, and more than 230 bird species. The lagoon is internationally known for its exceptional aquatic biodiversity, particularly several endemic cichlid fish species, making Laguna de Apoyo a key site for scientific research, evolution studies, and biodiversity conservation in Central America.
