Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island, Canada's smallest province, lies in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and is renowned for its red sandstone cliffs, rolling countryside, and rich farmland. Originally inhabited by the Mi'kmaq people, the island was explored by Europeans in the 16th century and later contested by France and Britain, coming under British control in 1763. It was named after Prince Edward, Duke of Kent. The island holds national historical importance as the site of the 1864 Charlottetown Conference, a key step toward Canadian Confederation. Today, Prince Edward Island is celebrated for its fishing heritage—especially lobster—its historic lighthouses, and its cultural influence, including the enduring legacy of Anne of Green Gables. The island blends deep history with a strong sense of place and community.

Sportfishing

Sport fishing on Prince Edward Island is deeply rooted in Canada's Atlantic heritage, gaining international fame in the 20th century for giant bluefin tuna, a symbol of strength and maritime skill. Historic harbors shaped techniques that evolved into modern, regulated recreational fishing. In Pacific waters near Prince of Wales Island, sport fishing developed around salmon, halibut, and cod, influenced by Indigenous knowledge and early coastal settlers. Together, these regions reflect a balance of tradition, sustainable management, and high-end angling tourism.
