Nassau – Queen's Staircase

The Nassau, capital of the Bahamas, is home to one of its most iconic historical landmarks: the Queen's Staircase, also known as Escalera de la Reina. This limestone staircase was carved by enslaved Africans between 1793 and 1794, providing access and escape routes to nearby Fort Fincastle, and later commemorated in honor of Queen Victoria. Today it forms part of a lush natural corridor surrounded by tropical vegetation. The ecosystem combines humid limestone forest with species such as palms, mahogany trees, ferns, ficus, and climbing vines. Wildlife includes tropical birds like warblers and doves, as well as lizards, butterflies, and diverse insects. Constant humidity and shade create a cool microclimate within the urban environment.
