Bridge of the Americas

The Bridge of the Americas, inaugurated on October 12, 1962, is an iconic structure connecting the American continents through the Isthmus of Panama, linking Panama City with the western side of the canal. Construction began in 1959 under the supervision of the U.S. engineering firm Sverdrup & Parcel and posed significant challenges due to the need to allow the passage of large ships through the Panama Canal. The bridge spans a total of 2,051 meters and rises 61 meters above sea level, featuring a central steel arch of 1,017 meters that ensures maritime navigation. Since its opening, it has been essential for land transport, international trade, and Panama's economic development. It also stands as a cultural and tourist symbol, representing the connection between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the historical significance of the Panama Canal.
