Masaya & the volcano

Masaya is one of the oldest cities in Nicaragua and an important indigenous cultural center since pre-Columbian times. It was inhabited by Chorotega peoples and, during the Spanish colonial period, it was established as an artisanal and commercial hub, particularly recognized for its traditions, folklore, and markets. The city has played a significant role in the country's social and political history, keeping its popular identity alive.

The Masaya Volcano, known as Popogatepe or "mountain that burns," is one of the most active volcanoes in Central America. Revered by indigenous peoples and feared by the conquerors, who called it "the mouth of hell," it is part of Masaya Volcano National Park. Its Santiago crater houses a visible lava lake, a symbol of Nicaragua's geological and natural power.
