Its humid tropical ecosystem includes dense forests, mangroves, and the nearby Alejandro de Humboldt National Park. Flora features cacao, coconut palms, coffee, and endemic plants, while fauna includes diverse birds, amphibians, and reptiles typical of Cuban forests. This natural richness and long isolation have helped maintain a landscape of remarkable biodiversity.

Baracoa
Baracoa, founded in 1511 by Diego VelƔzquez, is Cuba's oldest city and first capital, known as the "First City." Its colonial forts and traditions reflect early Spanish settlement and indigenous resistance led by Hatuey. Its remote location has preserved a remarkable natural setting of mountains, rivers like the Toa, and humid tropical forests rich in endemic species. Flora includes coconut, cacao, royal palms, and dense rainforest vegetation, while fauna features rare species such as the solenodon, endemic birds, and the colorful polymita snail. Near Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, Baracoa hosts one of the Caribbean's richest ecosystems.

Baracoa
Baracoa, in eastern Cuba, is known as the island's "First City" because it was the first permanent Spanish settlement, founded in 1512, and Cuba's first capital from 1518 to 1522; Christopher Columbus also visited the area in 1492. Its history combines TaĆno heritage, Spanish colonization, and a strong local identity shaped by the sea, rivers, and geographic isolation. Baracoa lies near the SaguaāBaracoa mountain region and the Alejandro de Humboldt area, one of the Caribbean's most important centers of biodiversity and endemism. The landscape features humid rainforest and evergreen forest, Cuban pine, ferns, and many endemic plants; its fauna includes birds, reptiles, and native mammals found in eastern Cuba.

Alejandro of Humboldt National Park
The Alejandro of Humboldt National Park, located near Baracoa, is one of the Caribbean's most significant ecosystems. Designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001, it stands out for its exceptional biodiversity and high endemism. Its complex geology and varied terrain support rainforests, mountains, and rivers. The park shelters unique species such as the almiquĆ and numerous endemic plants. Named after scientist Alexander von Humboldt, it represents Cuba's outstanding natural and scientific heritage.
