Belem Tower
The Belem Tower was built between 1514 and 1520 during the reign of King Manuel I as a defensive fortress and symbol of Portugal's maritime power. Located on the banks of the Tagus River, it protected Lisbon's harbor entrance and witnessed the Age of Discoveries. Its Manueline architecture blends Gothic and Renaissance influences with nautical stone carvings. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, the tower is admired for its ornate balconies, watchtowers, and historic panoramic views over the river and the Portuguese capital.

The Belem Tower was built between 1514 and 1520 during the reign of King Manuel I of Portugal to protect the entrance of Lisbon's harbor along the Tagus River. Designed by architect Francisco de Arruda, it combines Manueline architecture with Moorish and Renaissance influences. The tower became a symbol of the Portuguese Age of Discoveries, when explorers such as Vasco da Gama sailed toward Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Over the centuries, it served as a military fortress, customs checkpoint, and prison. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, it is renowned for its ornate balconies, maritime sculptures, and decorative battlements. Today, it remains one of Portugal's most visited historic landmarks.

Belem Tower
The Belem Tower is one of Portugal's most iconic landmarks and a lasting symbol of the Age of Discoveries. Built between 1514 and 1520 during the reign of King Manuel I, it was designed by architect Francisco de Arruda to defend the entrance to Lisbon's harbor along the Tagus River. Its Manueline architecture blends Gothic, Renaissance, and maritime influences, featuring elaborate carvings inspired by Portuguese navigation and exploration. Originally, the tower served as a military fortress, observation post, and customs checkpoint for ships entering the city. Over the centuries, it was also used as a political prison. The structure survived the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake and later became a national symbol of Portugal's maritime heritage and resilience. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, BelƩm Tower remains admired for its decorative balconies, battlements, historic importance, and panoramic views over the river and surrounding district.

Jeronimos Monastery
The Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon, Portugal, is a masterpiece of Manueline architecture built in the 16th century under King Manuel I. Monastery of the Jeronimos is closely associated with the Age of Discoveries and explorer Vasco da Gama. Its church contains royal tombs. The surrounding area near the Tagus estuary supports a mild urban ecosystem influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, where coastal vegetation and seabirds contribute to local biodiversity and ecological balance in the historic BelƩm district designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.
