Livingston

Livingston is a historic and multicultural town located at the mouth of the Río Dulce in the department of Izabal, Guatemala. Officially founded in 1831 and named after American jurist Edward Livingston, it is renowned for its strong Garífuna, Afro-Caribbean, Maya Q'eqchi', and mestizo heritage. Long isolated from overland routes, Livingston developed as a strategic center for trade and cultural exchange between the Caribbean Sea and Guatemala's interior. The arrival of the Garífuna people in the 19th century deeply shaped the town's identity, evident in its music, language, cuisine, and spiritual traditions. Modest architecture, continued use of the Garífuna language, and vibrant religious and cultural celebrations preserve its living history. Surrounded by tropical rainforest, rivers, and mangroves, Livingston stands as a unique symbol of cultural diversity and Caribbean-influenced history in Guatemala.
