Corn Island

Corn Island, located in the Nicaraguan Caribbean, consists of Great Corn Island and Little Corn Island, renowned for their turquoise waters and Afro-Caribbean culture. Before European contact, the islands were inhabited by indigenous groups such as the Rama people. During the 17th and 18th centuries, they fell under British influence and served as havens for Caribbean traders and pirates. The traditional economy revolved around coconut farming, fishing, and maritime trade, which gave the islands their name. In 1894, Corn Island was officially incorporated into Nicaragua following the annexation of the Mosquito Coast. Today, the islands preserve a distinct cultural identity marked by Creole heritage, English-based Creole language, Caribbean music, and traditions shaped by centuries of seafaring and cultural exchange.
