Pacaya Volcano

Pacaya Volcano, located south of Guatemala City, is one of the country's most active and historically significant volcanoes. Its documented eruptive history dates back to the 16th century, although geological evidence shows much earlier activity. After a long dormant period, Pacaya reawakened in 1961, beginning an almost continuous eruptive phase marked by lava flows, strombolian explosions, and frequent ash emissions. Over the centuries, its eruptions have had a strong impact on nearby communities, influencing agriculture, transportation routes, and settlement patterns. At the same time, Pacaya's persistent activity has played a key role in the development of volcanological research in Guatemala, offering scientists a valuable natural laboratory to study volcanic behavior, hazards, and risk management in an active tectonic region.
