Construction began in 1539 under Spanish rule to defend the strategic Caribbean port from pirates and rival European powers. Over four centuries it evolved into a six-level stronghold featuring thick stone walls, sentry boxes (garitas), underground passages, ramps, and powerful cannon batteries overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It withstood attacks by English and Dutch forces and later became a U.S. military installation after 1898.
