Exuma – Pig Beach
Pig Beach, located within the Exuma Cays, is a unique beach famous for its population of swimming pigs. Their origin remains uncertain, though it is widely believed they were introduced by sailors during the 20th century. The area is part of a tropical marine ecosystem defined by clear turquoise waters, coral reefs, and vast seagrass beds. Flora includes mangroves, palms, and salt-tolerant coastal vegetation. Marine fauna features tropical fish, rays, nurse sharks, and starfish. On land, besides the pigs, seabirds such as gulls and pelicans are commonly seen. The ecological balance is fragile and increasingly influenced by tourism, leading to efforts promoting sustainable practices. Pig Beach stands as a remarkable example of the interaction between wildlife and human activity in a distinctive Caribbean environment.

Bitter Guana Cay (Iguanas)
Bitter Guana Cay is a protected islet within the Exuma Cays, renowned for hosting the endangered northern Bahamian rock iguana (Cyclura cychlura). Historically uninhabited, the cay remained largely untouched by permanent human settlement, preserving its fragile ecosystem. Its terrain features white sandy beaches, coastal scrub, and limestone substrates where iguanas burrow and nest. Since the late twentieth century, controlled tourism has been implemented to safeguard wildlife, discouraging improper feeding and habitat disturbance while promoting conservation awareness and long-term ecological protection.
