Santiago de Cuba

Santiago de Cuba is one of the oldest and most significant cities in the Caribbean, founded in 1515 by the Spanish and regarded as a cradle of Cuban cultural identity. It served as the island's capital during the colonial period and played a key role in independence struggles. Its eclectic architecture blends colonial, neoclassical, and modern styles, while its harbor has long been strategic for trade and defense. The natural environment is shaped by the Sierra Maestra mountains, home to Pico Turquino, Cuba's highest peak. The region includes cloud forests, rainforests, and coastal ecosystems with mangroves and xerophytic vegetation rich in cacti and endemic plants. Its fauna is notable for high endemism, featuring species such as hutias, the solenodon, and various bats, along with birds and reptiles adapted to both mountainous and coastal habitats. The blend of history, biodiversity, and rugged landscape makes Santiago a region of exceptional cultural and ecological value.

Baconao Park

Baconao Park, located southeast of Santiago de Cuba, is a vast natural reserve declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1987. Covering about 85,000 hectares, it includes mountains, plains, and coastal areas, hosting rich biodiversity with many endemic species. Its name comes from a pre-Columbian indigenous legend about a boy and a magical tree. Historically, it was inhabited by native peoples and later by Franco-Haitian settlers who established coffee plantations. The park blends natural, cultural, and historical values, featuring landmarks such as La Gran Piedra and historic coffee estates.
