Zermatt & Matterhorn
Zermatt is an alpine village in Switzerland located at the base of the Matterhorn, one of the most famous peaks in the Alps. High altitude ecosystems combine alpine meadows, conifer forests, and glacial landscapes. Flora includes edelweiss, rhododendrons, and hardy grasses adapted to cold conditions. Fauna includes ibex, marmots, and birds of prey thriving in the alpine environment. Tourism and conservation efforts protect biodiversity and regulate access to fragile mountain habitats. Local authorities and national parks ensure sustainable management and environmental education year round protection programs.

Zermatt & Matterhorn

Zermatt & Matterhorn
Zermatt in the canton of Valais and the Matterhorn form a high alpine ecosystem of major historical and ecological value. The area has been inhabited since the thirteenth century, evolving from a farming village into a world renowned mountaineering destination. Its biodiversity includes conifer forests, alpine meadows, and cold adapted species such as the ibex, marmot, and birds of prey. The flora features rhododendrons, edelweiss, and high mountain grasses. The ecosystem depends on glacial meltwater, increasingly affected by climate change. Sustainable tourism efforts aim to preserve these landscapes while balancing human activity and conservation across the region for future generations ensuring ecological balance and resilience in alpine environments long term.

Zermatt & Matterhorn
Zermatt and Matterhorn are part of one of the most iconic alpine landscapes in Switzerland. Zermatt, once a small agricultural village, became a major center of mountaineering in the 19th century after the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. This pyramid shaped peak, rising to 4,478 meters, dominates the surrounding alpine ecosystem of glaciers, high mountain meadows, and conifer forests. Flora includes edelweiss, gentians, alpine rhododendrons, and mosses adapted to extreme cold. Fauna includes ibex, marmots, deer, and birds of prey such as the golden eagle. The ecosystem is highly fragile, shaped by altitude, low temperatures, and nutrient poor soils. Zermatt is also a car free village, helping preserve air quality and biodiversity. Sustainable tourism and glacier protection are essential to maintaining this unique high-altitude environment.

Gornergrat
Gornergrat is a mountain ridge in Zermatt, Switzerland, renowned for panoramic views of the Matterhorn. Opened to tourism in 1898 with the Gornergrat Bahn cogwheel railway, it represents an early achievement in alpine electric transport. Its history is closely tied to the rise of mountaineering and Swiss mountain tourism. Ecologically, it hosts high alpine ecosystems with lichens, mosses, and cold adapted wildlife such as ibex and marmots. Glacier retreat, particularly of the Gorner Glacier, is reshaping its landscape and biodiversity under climate change pressures driven by global warming today ongoing research.
