Chichicastenango
Chichicastenango, located in the western highlands of Guatemala, is one of the most significant historical and cultural centers of the K'iche' Maya people. Its origins date back to pre-Columbian times, when it served as an important ceremonial and trading site. After the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, the community preserved many ancestral traditions while blending them with imposed Christianity. This cultural fusion is clearly reflected in the Church of Santo Tomás, built in 1540 atop a former Maya temple, where indigenous rituals are still practiced. Chichicastenango is also renowned for its market, established in pre-Hispanic times, which remains a vital space for economic, social, and religious exchange, safeguarding customs, languages, and knowledge passed down through generations.
