Jeju Island

Jeju Island

Jeju Island is the largest island in South Korea, located south of the Korean Peninsula. Created by volcanic activity hundreds of thousands of years ago, its landscape is dominated by Hallasan Mountain, the nation's highest peak. Historically, Jeju developed a unique culture due to its geographic isolation, including the renowned haenyeo, female divers who harvest seafood without breathing equipment. The island contains extensive lava fields, volcanic tubes, and rugged coastlines shaped by natural forces. Its mild climate supports remarkable biodiversity, including subtropical forests, wildflowers, and numerous migratory bird species. These natural and cultural features make Jeju one of Korea's most distinctive destinations.

Jeju Island

Jeju Island, located south of South Korea, is one of the country's most unique natural and cultural regions. Created by ancient volcanic activity, it is famous for Hallasan Volcano, the highest mountain in South Korea, along with its lava formations, caves, and dramatic rocky coastlines. Throughout history, Jeju developed a distinctive identity because of its geographic isolation, preserving maritime traditions, agriculture, and the culture of the famous female divers known as haenyeo. For centuries, the island served as a place of exchange between Korea, China, and Japan. Its ecosystem includes subtropical forests, citrus farms, endemic plants, and diverse marine life. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage natural area, Jeju represents a remarkable balance between history, biodiversity, and environmental preservation, making it one of Korea's most important natural treasures.

Seongsan Ilchulbong

Seongsan Ilchulbong is a volcanic tuff cone located on the eastern coast of Jeju Island, created thousands of years ago by an underwater volcanic eruption. Its name means "Sunrise Peak" because of its famous views of the rising sun. Recognized as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, it features volcanic cliffs, grasslands, and unique coastal ecosystems. Its vegetation includes wind-resistant plants adapted to the ocean environment, while its wildlife supports various migratory birds. Seongsan Ilchulbong is a remarkable geological, cultural, and ecological symbol of Jeju, reflecting the connection between nature and Korean heritage.
