Interlaken is a historic Alpine town located between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. Its name means "between lakes," reflecting its strategic position in a breathtaking mountain landscape. The town originated around a 12th century Augustinian monastery that encouraged trade, agriculture, and hospitality for travelers crossing the Alps. During the 19th century, Interlaken became one of Europe's leading tourism centers due to mountaineering, luxury hotels, and expanding railway connections. Its alpine ecosystem includes dense forests of fir, pine, and beech trees, along with meadows, rivers, and nearby glaciers. Native flora features edelweiss, gentians, and wild orchids adapted to high elevations. The region's fauna includes marmots, red deer, foxes, ibex, and golden eagles. Crystal-clear waters from the Aare and Lütschine rivers sustain local fish populations and support a balanced, environmentally protected ecosystem.

Höhematte Park
Höhematte Park is the green heart of Interlaken, Switzerland. This large urban park emerged during the nineteenth century as an open promenade facing the city's grand hotels, preserving clear views of the Jungfrau and the Bernese Alps. Historically, it became a gathering place for concerts, festivals, and tourism activities connected to the rise of Alpine rail travel. Ecologically, its broad lawns, ornamental trees, and seasonal flower gardens provide habitat for local birds and pollinating insects. The park also helps moderate urban temperatures and maintains the scenic ecological connection between Lakes Thun and Brienz, supporting regional environmental balance.
