Zurich

Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland, located at the northwestern tip of Lake Zurich, surrounded by wooded hills and the beginning of the Alpine foothills. Its ecosystem blends dense urban development with alpine influenced nature, shaped by the Limmat and Sihl rivers that cross the city. Historically, it began as a Celtic and Roman settlement and evolved into a major European financial and cultural hub. Its flora includes extensive urban parks, surrounding forests, and meadows, with native species such as beech, oak, and spruce in nearby natural areas. Around 1,200 wild plant species have been recorded within the city limits. The fauna is equally diverse, including foxes, hedgehogs, birds of prey, waterfowl, and nearly half of Switzerland's bird and mammal species. Zurich's ecosystem is notable for its strong urban biodiversity, supported by environmental planning that preserves habitats, wetlands, and ecological corridors linking the city to the surrounding Alpine landscape.

Lindenhof

Lindenhof is a historic hill and park located in Zürich's old town, Switzerland, overlooking the Limmat River and the city center. In Roman times it was the fortified settlement of Turicum, later used as a Carolingian palace site. Today it is a peaceful public square known for outdoor chess tables and shaded seating under lime, chestnut, and maple trees. Its urban ecosystem supports birds, pollinating insects, and drought tolerant plants. Lindenhof remains an important cultural landmark symbolizing Zurich's history, leisure, and community life and is popular with residents and visitors alike.
