Semuc Champey

Semuc Champey, located in the heart of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, is a natural and cultural treasure. Its name comes from the Q'eqchi' language, meaning "where the river hides under the earth." This remarkable formation of turquoise natural pools sits atop a limestone bridge beneath which the Cahab贸n River flows underground. The area has been inhabited by the Maya people since pre-Columbian times, who considered these waters sacred and used them for ceremonial rituals. During the colonial era, the region remained largely isolated due to its rugged geography, helping preserve its unique biodiversity and pristine landscapes. Today, Semuc Champey is an ecologically and historically significant site, where nature and history converge, offering visitors a place of reflection, adventure, and a deep connection to the ancestral Maya heritage.

Semuc Champey

Semuc Champey was once a remote attraction, but today it has become one of the best tourist spots in Guatemala. The pools at this place form a staircase of turquoise pools that stretch over a natural limestone bridge. The water comes from the Cahab贸n River, which goes through underground tunnels before resurfacing. This picturesque place is one of the best spots in Guatemala for swimming and sunbathing. The visitor can take a 45-minute hike through the jungle to 'El Mirador.' The view from the top is beautiful, both of Semuc and the lush green mountains that surround it.
