Tikal

Tikal, located in the tropical rainforest of PetĂ©n, Guatemala, was one of the most powerful cities of the ancient Maya civilization. Its origins date back to the Middle Preclassic period (around 800 BC), reaching its peak during the Classic period (AD 250–900), when it became a major political, economic, and ceremonial center. The city was ruled by a royal dynasty that engaged in alliances and rivalries with other great Maya cities such as Calakmul. Tikal is renowned for its sophisticated urban planning, astronomical complexes, and monumental pyramid temples, including Temple I and Temple IV. Around the 10th century, the city declined and was gradually reclaimed by the jungle until its rediscovery in the 19th century. Today, Tikal National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a powerful symbol of Maya history and cultur.
