Tabacón Resort & Spa is located in La Fortuna de San Carlos, Alajuela, at the base of Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica's lush tropical rainforest ecosystem. The surrounding biodiversity is rich and vibrant, featuring wildlife such as howler monkeys, sloths, coatis, iguanas, poison dart frogs, morpho butterflies, toucans, and many other bird and reptile species. The resort is set within a living landscape shaped by volcanic activity, where geothermal waters emerge naturally to form thermal rivers and mineral pools surrounded by dense jungle. Historically, the area gained global attention after the 1968 Arenal eruption, which reshaped the environment and eventually boosted eco-tourism development. Tabacón itself was designed with sustainability in mind, preserving hundreds of acres of rainforest and integrating conservation practices into its operations. In Lake Arenal, near La Fortuna de San Carlos, windsurfing conditions are among the most reliable in Costa Rica. During the dry season (November to April), trade winds typically blow at 20–30 knots, intensified by the volcanic and mountainous terrain surrounding the lake. This produces choppy "bump and jump" waters ideal for advanced freeride sessions. The ecosystem features rainforest-covered shores, rich birdlife, mammals, and diverse aquatic species. Available tours include windsurfing, kitesurfing, wingfoiling, kayaking, fishing trips, and eco-adventure excursions. Location: northern highlands of Costa Rica, between Alajuela and Guanacaste provinces, near Arenal Volcano.
