Pacuare Lodge
Pacuare Lodge is an iconic ecolodge founded in 1986 as a conservation initiative within Costa Rica's Caribbean rainforest. Set along the Pacuare River and surrounded by about 25,000 acres of protected jungle, it began as a rafting camp and evolved into a sustainable luxury retreat. Its bungalows were built with minimal environmental impact, preserving surrounding trees and ecosystems. The lodge supports scientific research, responsible tourism, and cultural connections with the indigenous CabƩcar communities.

Pacuare Lodge is an eco-lodge nestled within Costa Rica's Caribbean rainforest, primarily accessed by river. Established with a strong sustainability vision, it has played a key role in private rainforest conservation and in protecting the Pacuare River basin from hydroelectric development. The surrounding ecosystem hosts remarkable biodiversity: howler and capuchin monkeys, sloths, elusive jaguars and ocelots, alongside vibrant birdlife such as toucans, great green macaws, and hummingbirds. Reptiles and amphibians include poison dart frogs, iguanas, and non-venomous snakes. The flora is equally rich, featuring towering ceiba trees, heliconias, bromeliads, and orchids. The lodge supports scientific research, reforestation, and low-impact practices, blending refined rustic comfort with a deep respect for the environment and nearby Indigenous CabƩcar communities.

Jaguar in the jungle of the Pacuare River
Observing or hearing a jaguar's roar in the Pacuare River rainforest is a rare yet powerful experience. This elusive, nocturnal predator is seldom seen, so encounters are usually limited to distant calls, tracks, or guide interpretations. The Pacuare ecosystem in Limón, Costa Rica, is a pristine tropical rainforest rich in biodiversity, hosting jaguars, monkeys, birds, and reptiles. The Jaguar thrives within protected biological corridors. Tours in the area include whitewater rafting, guided hikes, night walks, and eco-lodge stays, where expert guides help identify jungle sounds within one of Central America's most intact natural environments.
