Tortuguero

Tortuguero, located on Costa Rica's northern Caribbean coast, is a region of natural canals, tropical rainforest, and remarkable biodiversity. It was originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples and later visited by explorers and traders during the colonial period. In the 20th century, sea turtle hunting led to temporary settlements, until conservation efforts emerged in the 1950s. In 1975, Tortuguero National Park was established, protecting vital nesting beaches for green sea turtles. Today, Tortuguero stands as a leading example of ecotourism and wildlife conservation in Costa Rica.

Back to the Ocean

The Tortuguero canals in Limón, Costa Rica, form a maze of rivers and lagoons through lush tropical rainforest. This ecosystem hosts incredible biodiversity, including monkeys, sloths, caimans, and exotic birds. During nesting season, green turtles arrive on the beaches to lay their eggs, a fascinating natural event. After hatching, the newborn turtles embark on a critical journey to the sea, guided by instinct. Tours along the canals allow visitors to observe the rich flora and fauna in their natural habitat, offering a deep connection with the region's wildlife.
