The hotel serves as an excellent base for exploring Uluru, joining guided walks, watching sunrise views, and learning about Anangu traditions.

Sails in the Desert Hotel
Sails in the Desert is the five-star hotel at Ayers Rock Resort (Uluru/Ayers Rock): 228 rooms beneath the striking white "sails," Red Ochre Spa, the Mulgara Gallery and dining that showcases Indigenous art. Opened in the 1980s, it has undergone major refurbishments since Voyages (now Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia) invested in the resort. Activities include guided cultural tours, camel rides, scenic flights and sunrise/sunset viewings of Uluru. Rock-art surrounds the base: Mountford (1965) recorded twelve major painting sites and many hundreds of artworks; commonly depicted ancestral figures include Mala (hare-wallaby), Kuniya (woma python) and Liru (poisonous snake).

Sails in the Desert Hotel
Opened in 1984 (originally the Sheraton), Sails in the Desert is the flagship five-star hotel at Yulara created to move visitor accommodation outside UluruāKata Tjuta National Park. Its iconic white sail roof and low rise plan by COX Architects respond to the desert setting, earning awards for enduring, context-sensitive design. The hotel (around 228 rooms) blends contemporary luxury with Anangu art and interpretation: the Mulgara Gallery, Red Ochre Spa and on-site dining link guests to local culture and guided walks (Mala Walk, Kuniya Walk, Mutitjulu Waterhole). From Yulara you can reach Uluru in roughly 20 minutes by road; the resort was conceived as a managed gateway that supports conservation and cultural programs.
Named ancestral beings and rock-art figures associated with Uluru: Mala (rufous hare-wallaby), Kuniya (woma python), Liru (poisonous snake), Mimi (Mimih spirits), Wati Kutjara (Two Men), Lungkaṯa (blue-tongued lizard).

The hotel includes a pool, spa, Indigenous art galleries, and dining that highlights native Australian ingredients. Its prime location allows easy access to guided walks, cultural presentations, and stargazing experiences beneath some of the clearest and darkest skies in Australia.
