Kilitbahir Castle
Kilitbahir Castle is an Ottoman fortress commissioned in 1462 by Sultan Mehmed II to control the strategic Dardanelles Strait after the conquest of Constantinople. Its distinctive clover-shaped layout and massive defensive walls showcase advanced military engineering of the fifteenth century. Over the centuries, the fortress played a crucial role in protecting Ottoman naval routes and later became significant during the Gallipoli Campaign of World War I. The surrounding area supports Mediterranean coastal ecosystems, including seabirds, wind-adapted vegetation, and diverse marine life sustained by the nutrient-rich waters of the strait.
