Originally founded as a mountain farm and shepherd shelter in 1844, it was expanded for tourists in 1874. Over time, it became one of Norway's oldest and most renowned mountain lodges. Surrounded by glaciers, alpine rivers, and hardy Arctic vegetation, the hotel provides direct access to historic hiking and mountaineering routes. Spiterstulen Hotel
Spiterstulen Hotel is one of Norway's most historic and iconic mountain lodges. Located in the Visdalen valley between Galdhøpiggen and Glittertind, the hotel stands about 1,100 meters above sea level, surrounded by glaciers, alpine rivers, and ancient mountain routes once used by traders and shepherds. The site originally served as a summer mountain farm owned by the Sulheim family during the nineteenth century. In 1874, guest rooms were added for hikers and climbers, transforming it into one of the earliest tourist lodges in Jotunheimen. Over seven generations, the property has been expanded and modernized while preserving its traditional Norwegian timber architecture and historic courtyard layout. Spiterstulen also played an important role in the early expeditions to Galdhøpiggen, Norway's highest peak, and today remains a major base for trekking, glacier walks, and mountaineering adventures in Jotunheimen National Park.
Hulderstigen
Hulderstigen is a mountain trail located near Tessanden within the dramatic landscape of Jotunheimen National Park. The region, traditionally known as the "Home of the Giants" in Norse mythology, contains historic routes once used by shepherds and explorers during the nineteenth century. Hulderstigen crosses alpine terrain shaped by glaciers, deep valleys, rivers, and clear mountain lakes formed during the Ice Age. Its fragile ecosystem supports wild reindeer, Arctic foxes, and hardy bird species adapted to severe Nordic conditions. During summer, alpine flowers, mosses, and lichens cover the slopes, preserving the park's rich ecological balance and protected natural heritage.
