Gripsholms Värdshus is a historic inn located in Mariefred, Sweden, directly opposite Gripsholm Castle on the shores of Lake Mälaren. Its origins date back to 1609, when King Charles IX granted official privileges to establish the first formal inn in the area after local townspeople protested the burden of hosting royal travelers for free. The present building stands on land once belonging to the medieval Carthusian monastery Pax Mariae, from which the town of Mariefred takes its name. Over the centuries, the inn has been rebuilt and expanded, most notably following major archaeological excavations in 1987 that uncovered monastery foundations integrated into its structure. These findings influenced its restoration and interior design. Today, Gripsholms Värdshus blends historic character with modern comfort, featuring individually designed rooms and preserved architectural details. It is widely regarded as one of Sweden's oldest inns and remains an important cultural landmark reflecting centuries of hospitality tradition.
