Villefranche-sur-Mer
Villefranche-sur-Mer, on the French Riviera, is a historic natural harbor founded in the 14th century under the Counts of Provence. Its deep bay has long sheltered military and commercial fleets. The old town features narrow medieval streets, the 16th-century Saint Elme citadel, and strong fishing traditions. Ecologically, the bay contains extensive Posidonia seagrass meadows that support Mediterranean marine biodiversity, while its clear waters host fish, invertebrates, and help protect the coastline from erosion and wave energy. Today it is a protected coastal site valued for tourism and ecology in southern France.
