The wildlife surrounding Machu Picchu and the Sanctuary Lodge area is remarkably diverse due to the blend of cloud forest and Andean mountain habitats. One of the region's most iconic species is the spectacled bear, a shy inhabitant of the forested slopes. Visitors may also encounter Andean deer, viscachas resting among boulders, and a wide variety of colorful butterflies flourishing in the moist environment. Birdlife is especially abundant: the Andean cock-of-the-rock, Peru's national bird, is often found near forested ravines, along with numerous tanagers, hummingbirds, and Andean woodpeckers. The area also supports small amphibians and reptiles adapted to the mild climate. This protected ecosystem enriches the surroundings of the Inca sanctuary with vibrant natural life.

Hotel Sanctuary Lodge
The Sanctuary Lodge Hotel, located beside the entrance to Machu Picchu, is the only property positioned directly next to the Inca citadel. Its origins date back to the early 20th century, when it served as a simple base for archaeologists restoring the site after its rediscovery. Over the years, it evolved into an exclusive retreat offering unmatched proximity to terraces, temples, and scenic Inca trails during quieter visiting hours.
The surrounding cloud forest hosts rich wildlife, including viscachas, various species of hummingbirds, tanagers, Andean cock-of-the-rock, and occasional spectacled bears. Vegetation features endemic orchids and lush bromeliad-covered trees. Nearby highlights include the Temple of the Sun, the Sacred Rock, the trail to the Sun Gate (Intipunku), and the climb to Huayna Picchu, all reachable within minutes.

Gallitos de las rocas
The Peruvian Andean cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus) is an iconic bird of the cloud forests surrounding Machu Picchu. Males display brilliant red plumage and a distinctive crest. It inhabits moist cliffs and dense forest where it nests on rocky walls. The species prefers shaded areas rich in fruit. During courtship, males gather in "leks," performing energetic displays with jumps and resonant calls to attract females, creating one of the region's most remarkable wildlife spectacles.
